The Art Museum, housed by the elegant Neo – Baroque Jean Mihail Palace, is Craiova’s most important sight and one of the most important monuments of civil architecture from the beginning of the 20th century. Built between 1900 and 1908 by a French architect for one of the richest noblemen in Romania, the building accommodates, since 1954, the excellent and much appreciated art museum.
The Jean Mihail Palace was built between 1900 and 1907, at the initiative of Constantin Mihail, one of the richest people in the country at that time. The building was decorated with Venetian mirrors, chandeliers with ornaments made of Murano glass, columns made of Carrara marble, walls covered with Lyon silk, all giving the edifice an elegant and refined air.
In 1908, the “Alexandru and Aristia Aman” Pinacoteca (Art Gallery) was opened in Craiova, according to the will of the two philanthropists. It included 17th century paintings belonging to the Dutch, Flemish, Italian and French schools, Romanian and international decorative art, to which it was added a great number of works through significant donations. The Pinacoteca was taken over by the Oltenia Museum, but in 1954 it became a freestanding Art Museum, accommodated inside the Jean Mihail Palace.
The museum exhibits over 12,000 works of Romanian and international art: paintings, sculptures, decorative art and porcelains. The main attractions are Brancusi’s sculptures, including the famous “Mademoiselle Pogany” and “The Kiss”, and the paintings of Theodor Aman and Nicolae Grigorescu.
At the moment, the museum is closed for renovation.
