The Evangelical Church in Sibiu is a 14th century large basilica, built on the site of an older 12th century church, a cemetery, three chapels and a school. It is considered to be the oldest Transylvanian building in the late Gothic architectural style. The church’s tower, which dominates Huet Square, is 73.34m high, being the tallest medieval building in Romania. Its 7 levels and 4 steeples on the corners were a sign that the city had “jus gladii”, which represented the legal authority of executing people for their offenses and crimes.
Inside the church, visitors will find a Baroque organ dating from 1671 and a newer organ from 1914, considered to be, at the time of its installation, the biggest in South-Eastern Europe. The interior painting, restored between 1989 and 1990, dates from the middle of the 15th century, when a supposedly Austrian painter, Johannes de Rosenau, painted the church’s walls adding Austrian and Italian influences to the icons. The Evangelical Church’s ferula (narthex) is the resting place of Baron Samuel von Brukenthal, and also of Mihnea cel Rău, the son of Dracula.
