The official language in Romania is Romanian, the only Romance language among the Slavic ones from Eastern Europe. If you speak or have notions of Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese or other languages derived from Latin, then there are big chances you will understand and make yourself understood easily. Apart from the Latin heritage, there are also many words of Dacian, Slav, Greek or Turkish origin, as well as some recent French, English or German borrowings. Depending on the regions you are travelling to, you can practice your German with the Saxons in Transylvania and Banat, Hungarian in the Magyar communities in Transylvania, or Russian with the lipoveni from the Danube Delta.
English is widely spoken particularly in hotels, resorts and the tourist areas and it is understood by many people, especially by the youth. However, older generations are likely to smile at you and nod their heads if you try talking to them in a different language than Romanian. The same thing is valid when you move away from the tourist area. In addition, most directions and road signs are in Romanian, with highway markers, distances and speed signs based on the metric system.
All of the above are reasons why we think it is a great idea to learn some useful words and phrases before coming here. Don’t be afraid to try. It is very nice – as well as funny - to hear our native tongue spoken (and hacked) by others, and everyone will surely appreciate the effort! Below we have prepared a list of language tips and helpful notions in Romanian, including the ones you would want to avoid.
