Moldovița Monastery is a famous monastery built by Petru Rareș in 1532 in the immediate vicinity of an older church from 1410 which was destroyed by landslides. From an architectural point of view, it presents a special style, with Gothic windows and Renaissance interior doors.
Finished in 1537, the interior and exterior painting impresses through its monumentality and expressivity, as well as through a pastel colour tone. The painting in Moldovița shows, just as that of Voroneţ, a great artistic expressivity, being a masterpiece of Petru Rareș’ epoch. The predominant colour of the murals is yellow. Particularly impressive are the exterior murals, with the sweeping depictions of the Siege of Constantinople, the Tree of Jesse, the Crucifixion, the Journey of the Magi and the Virgin at Prayer. Moldovița Monastery is also famous for the spectacular fresco of the Siege of Constantinople in which the Persians were changed with Turks.
The fortified precincts of the monastery were built in 1621, including walls with corner towers. At the beginning of the 17th century, the fortified precinct was rebuilt and it was erected the building now housing the monastery’s museum. Other important restoration works took place between 1954 – 1960 and 1985 – 1986. In the monastery’s museum we can admire furniture (the throne of Rareș), icons, crosses, as well as the Golden Apple trophy awarded by the International Association of Travel Journalists. The exceptional value of Moldovița has led to it being included in 1993 in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
