Part of the Brukenthal Museum, the Pharmacy Museum in Sibiu is one of the most important institutions of its kind in Romania and in Europe. The museum was opened in 1972 to mirror the long tradition of pharmaceutical activities in the region of Transylvania and especially in Sibiu, the city where the first pharmacy in Romania was mentioned in a document dating from the 15th century.
Situated in the Small Square, in the centre of Sibiu, the historical building housing the museum impresses through its Gothic and Renaissance architectural features. It was erected in 1568 and shortly after its building it housed the third-oldest pharmacies in the city, named “La Ursul Negru”.
Nowadays, the museum’s collection includes over 6.600 items related to the history and development of pharmaceutical activities during the past four centuries. The items are structured in three different sectors: the Oficina, the laboratory and the homeopathic sector. In the Oficina, the part of a pharmacy where the pharmaceutical products were displayed, visitors can now admire furniture, vessels, grinding mortars, scale and weights. Passing through the medical kits’ hall, you will get to the laboratory to learn more about the evolution of medicine and science. The last sector of the museum is the homeopathic one, which exhibits almost 3.000 items, such as kits and bottles, originally used in the local pharmacy named “La Înger”.
