Brașov’s Urban Civilisation Museum is a section of the Ethnography Museum, officially opened in 2010. The museum illustrates the way of life of Brașov’s dwellers across three centuries, the cultural interferences between Orient and Occident, as well as Saxon traditions and customs. The main attraction of the newest museum in Brașov is the mural painting with the biggest surface in Transylvania.

The museum functions in a modern space located in a historic building in Brașov’s old city centre, an architectural monument of the 16th – 18th centuries. The main concept aims at illustrating the specific daily concerns of the dwellers of an urban society, as well as the city’s geographic contextualization regarding the economical and commercial relations with the East and the West for three centuries.

The exhibits on display at Brașov’s Urban Civilisation Museum were selected from the deposits of the Ethnography Museum, so that they would evoke the city’s glory days, when the Saxon culture was at its highest point. The museum’s most interesting exhibits, highly appreciated by the public, are the two impeccable folk costumes of the patricians (the superior social class) and the mural painting.

The painting was covered in the communist period and rediscovered during the restorations that took place after 1989. The discovery of this wonderful creation was a surprise for the restorers too, who did not hold any documents related to this painting or its extended surface. The painting’s restoration was realized in line with the norms at European level, through pickling with little interventions on the actual work (affecting less than 5% of its surface).
